Update: winter of discontent

Just letting you know that

a) ice storm Sunday morning

b) power was out for 15 hours, back on for five, and is now out again.

c) my generator isn’t working

d) neither is my mother’s generator

And therefore I have no power and no inclination to try to get off the mountain to anywhere that does have power. Thus, zero posts until the power is back on.

My mother is staying with a neighbor whose generator is working. I’m crossing my fingers that I won’t have to figure out what to do with the critters if the temp in my house drops to dangerous cold.

Posting will resume when power turns back on. Hopefully later today, but who knows.

Meanwhile, I’m reading paper books…

  1. Best of luck with the power coming back on before it gets too cold.

Maybe huddle with the pups & cats under lots of blankets – build a blanket fort over the couch or bed to keep the warmth close (but leave an air slit open!). Wear a beany or shawl over your head, you lose a lot of heat from your head!
If you’re burning candles or oil lamps for light and warmth, be careful not to shut off all airflow – they need more oxygen than you might realise. Don’t leave them on unsupervised when you go to sleep!

You may know all this already, but since you’re in a generally warm part of the country it might not spring to mind immediately.

  2. It’s probably safer to stay where you are – ice storms are quite dangerous for travelers – but I hope you can stay warm along with all your critters until the power comes back on!
BTW, situations like power outages are why I buy so many of the books I like in actual physical form, despite the convenience of ebooks; we don’t have outages often, but when we do I want to have something to read. So I do appreciate that you have that option available.

  3. We’ve had far too many power outages ourselves(there’s something with the electrical power lines that’s never been right, say the people who’ve been around for fifty years), and the house can get pretty cold, even here in sea-level California where we don’t get ice storms. Stay as warm as you can, keep the animals close, and I hope your power comes back soon!
